Twic East authorities report cattle die-offs, insecurity after attack

Authorities in Twic East County in South Sudan’s Jonglei state report foot disease killing cattle in the county. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Commissioner Dau Akoi Jurkuc said. over 3,000 cattle in various cattle camps have died due to lack of treatment.

He further said a large number of cattle are still infected. Dau called on the National Ministry of Animal Resources and health organizations to send vaccines so that the disease is contained before it spreads further.  

Separately, the commissioner said local citizens are concerned about insecurity after an attack last week by a group of cattle raiders in the area. The county official said about 243 head of cattle had been taken from Pager and Lualdiit villages by cattle raiders from Pibor area.

He disclosed that he tried to talk to the local authorities in Pibor area in order discuss the matter, but to no avail. The commissioner said the incident stirred up fear among the citizens.

Dau called on the state government and the Pibor chief administrator to solve the problem as soon as possible.
