Local authorities of Warrap State have said that about 20,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance in Twic County.

Nearly two weeks ago, armed youth from Twic County of Warrap State attacked Anet market in the Abyei Administrative Area over contested lands between the two communities.

Deng Tong Goch, the Twic County commissioner told Radio Tamazuj Wednesday that his county is currently hosting an estimated 40,000 IDPs in 11 locations and they are in need of both food and non-food items.

“We have 11 IDPs sites with roughly 40,000 individuals in the villages of Majok-noon, Nyin-Deng -Ayuel, Aweng, Ajak kuec, Wunrok, Midol and other places, and some of them are still coming,” Commissioner Tong said. “On the first day of their arrival, I talked to the humanitarian organizations on the ground, especially UNOCHA, and an assessment was done but I do not know why they delayed. Only MSF responded and supplied assorted drugs to some health center in Twic County.”

The Warrap State’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission chairperson, Gabriel Anyar, confirmed the humanitarian needs of the IDPs in the area.

“We have already conducted assessments on 18 and 19 of this month and 3,300 households were identified. Today (Wednesday) we are sitting with (humanitarian) organizations for a response plan,” Anyar said.

“We have more than 9 IDP campsites, some of them are in Mayen Abun, Majok Non, and others areas but IOM is now ready to support the IDPs. If they do not today, then it will be within this week,” he added.

Relatedly, the Abyei information minister, Ajang Deng Miyen, said IDPs in his area also need humanitarian assistance because they have been displaced by the Messiriya tribesmen.

“IDPs need support in Abithok and Akacnhial and we engaged humanitarian organizations and you know what they first do is rapid assessment and after that, they respond,” Minister Deng said. “We do not have peace with Messiriya and are always on alert. Four days ago, Messiriya attacked people in Anet and they killed one person and wounded another but they did not take any cattle.”
