Turabi’s successor restructures party leadership

Ibrahim al-Sanusi, the Acting Secretary-General of the opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP), on Monday announced restructuring of party institutions to include the general secretariat and nomination of three deputies to the secretary-general and establishment of new secretariats.

Ibrahim al-Sanusi, the Acting Secretary-General of the opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP), on Monday announced restructuring of party institutions to include the general secretariat and nomination of three deputies to the secretary-general and establishment of new secretariats.

Ibrahim al-Sanusi succeeded Dr. Hassan Turabi as head of the Islamist opposition party in Sudan. The Sudanese Islamist thinker Hassan al-Turabi died of a heart attack in Khartoum on 5 March.

In his first news conference on Monday, al-Sanusi said the General Secretariat met and agreed to restructure the party leadership to include the Secretary General and his three deputies.

The opposition leader explained that they unanimously selected Ahmed Ibrahim al-Turabi, who hails from late al-Turabi’s family, Ali al-Hajj, and Thuraya Yusuf as deputies to the secretary-general.

Al-Sanusi noted that they also selected new secretaries within the General-Secretariat, and nominated Idris Suleiman as secretary for expatriates and Islamic movements, a position previously held by al-Sanusi himself.

He disclosed that the secretary-general of the PCP party was assigned to follow up on the National Dialogue dossier and coordinate for the upcoming convention in April.

He added the party leader was also tasked to work on the nizaam al-khaalif or ‘successor regime’, saying those issues need more studies.
