Unknown gunmen shot and instantly killed a truck driver in Tonj County of Warrap State on Saturday, police said.
The incident occurred in Makuei village.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, David Bol Maguang, the county’s criminal investigation officer said the deceased, a Kenyan national, was driving a commercial truck to Wau town via Tonj.
“On Saturday, a driver of a truck called Ali Hassan Dawa from Kenya was coming from the direction of Cueibet to Tonj and he was attacked by criminals when he arrived in Makuei village,” said Bol.
According to the police officer, the unknown gunmen opened fire on the truck that was carrying the deceased, co-driver and a soldier.
“When the soldier on board fired at the criminals, they ran away and the co-driver was able to proceed with the truck to Tonj,” he said.
Bol further said efforts are underway to apprehend the attackers. He appealed to drivers to avoid moving at night, saying criminal activities are on the increase along the Tonj-Cueibet road.
