Troika condemns Abyei attacks

The Embassies of Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States have condemned the latest attacks in the Abyei Administrative Area.

Deputy Administrator Noon Deng Nyok and several colleagues were killed in the December 31, 2023 attack.

‘The use of violence as a tool for political or economic competition perpetuates a dangerous cycle and must be universally rejected by all South Sudanese leaders,’’ Troika said in a terse media statement dispatched by Daisy Dix, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S Embassy in Juba.

They called for investigations into all other incidents of violence adding that perpetrators should be held accountable.

Early this week, five people were killed in fresh fighting in Athony Ayuok and Ayuoks villages in Twic, Warrap State and Abyei Special Administrative Area.

On Monday authorities on both sides said seven villagers also suffered serious injuries during the bloody skirmishes. Among the dead was a South Sudan’s People’s Defense Force’s (SSPDF) soldier, sources said.

Bulis Koch, Abyei Information Minister, accused Twic county armed youth and SSPDF of instigating the skirmishes in the area.
