Trial to begin of Nuba activist, Jalila

The National Intelligence and Security Services’ (NISS) prosecutor has referred the case against the detained activist, Mrs Jalila Khamis Koko, to Khartoum North criminal court for its first hearing. Originally from the Nuba Mountains, Jalila has been in NISS detention since March. Well known as an activist, she has been charged with inciting ethnic hatred and disseminating false information under articles 66 and 64 of the 1991 Sudanese penal code. A teacher and civil society activist, she was arrested at her home in El-Shajara district, south of Khartoum and has not yet faced the charges against her in court. It is expected that the trial will begin on Thursday under Judge Nasir Sallah-Aldin. Jalilia has spoken out repeatedly on the war between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) in the Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan.
