Trial of eight Darfuri university students involved in protests starts in Omdurman

Eight Darfuri students from Omdurman’s University of the Holy Quran and Islamic Sciences are on trial this week following an outburst of violence on campus last week.

The fighting broke out when Darfur students demanded exemptions for tuition fees, a clause stipulated in the Abuja and Doha peace agreement on Darfur, but administration officials refused.

One Darfuri student told Radio Tamazuj they had organized sit-in protests against the administration for rejecting the fees exemption last week. He said they were then attacked by security forces and university students who support the government.

He said some of the Darfuri students sustained injuries and at least 13 protestors were arrested.

The first hearing of the trial, which started yesterday, was postponed until next Sunday.
