Unknown armed men on Saturday shot and killed a traffic policeman along the Yei-Kaya road within Yei River State, police said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the state police commissioner, Yuasa Lujang Kamba said the deceased, identified as Sergeant Major Paulino Lomude was shot dead at Ligi village in Mugwo payam while coming from Kaya town.
He said the deceased worked at the Kaya border post and was in charge of issuing car and motorcycle number plates.
Lujang further said investigations into the incident have been launched to determine the motive behind the killing of the traffic policeman.
“The late left Kaya town at around 1:00pm and after reaching Ligi, he fell into a road ambush and was shot dead by unknown people. His motorcycle and the gun were left on his body,” the police officer said.
He added, “We have opened an investigation to find out who exactly killed the traffic officer”.
Lujang pointed out that nobody has arrested for involvement in the incident and no one claimed responsibility for the killing of the traffic policeman.
The senior police officer, however, said the main road remains accessible to travelers, adding that the security situation in the entire state is stable.
“The road is very accessible, the security situation is normal, people and cars are moving freely. The security situation is under control,” Lujang said.
