A traffic police identified as Sgt Thomas Tito, 35, committed suicide by hanging himself in Torit Town in Eastern Equatoria State on Monday.
Officials said the officer had before committing suicide quarreled with a family member.
Eastern Equatoria State Acting Director of Traffic Police Col Leonard Peter John told Radio Tamazuj that the officer committed suicide at around 4am.
He said the reasons for hanging himself remain unclear, urging other officers to share their issues with the authorities for solutions.
“Yes, it was at around 5am when I got a report that an officer named Thomas Tito had hanged himself at around 4am. The reasons for the suicide remain unclear but could be due to family issues,” he explained.
John described Tito as a quiet person who avoided controversies.
Torit Municipal Council Mayor Mustafa Albino Zachariah also confirmed the incident, saying the officer hanged himself using a rope.
He said security agents have been dispatched to investigate the matter.
The Executive Director for the Women Agency for Progress Organization (WAPO), Flora Sebit Jada, expressed dismay over the incident, alluding to the current economic crisis.
She urged the people to commit themselves to productive activities to meet the family needs, rather than depending on salaries. “If the government cannot give a salary, create something to get money. Do brick laying and other income generating activities. People should not lose hope in this country,” she said.
