Traditional courts in Warawar payam of Aweil East County remain operational amidst the temporary ban on public gatherings due to the novel coronavirus.

Santino Atak Awan Anei, the paramount chief of Warawar payam, told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that the traditional courts in his area are operating normally to handle social issues.

He cited thefts and family disputes as the common cases that need to be resolved to maintain security and the wellbeing of local residents.

“There are a lot of challenges forcing me to conduct trials. I am now working on a case which is about a married woman taken by another man and her real husband has come and opened a case on the matter,” said Anei.

The community leader, however, welcomed President Salva Kiir’s directive on COVID-19 prevention, saying social distancing is being observed by local courts in the area.

South Sudan has so far recorded four cases of the new coronavirus.
