Several traders in Renk town in South Sudan’s Upper Nile have complained of a recession and decline in purchasing power at the market, prompting them to move to Malakal town.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, shop owners noted the purchasing power of consumers at Renk market has dropped.
They attributed the problem to a lack of liquidity despite plenty of goods at the market, which forces several traders to look for other markets so they can continue with their business.
“The market is witnessing recession there two days. The purchasing power is declining. So we resorted to transporting goods from the border directly to Malakal because the market in Renk is not active,” one trader said.
“Foodstuffs in Renk are also facing the same problem leave alone mobile phones and other non-food items,” he added.
