Trader killed in Mayom County revenge attack

A local government official in Mayom County, Unity State, has confirmed the killing of a trader on Tuesday evening at 7:24 pm. The assailant sought revenge for the death of his relative four years ago.

The deceased has been identified as Gatkouth Gatluak.

Mayom County Commissioner Luka Chierey told Radio Tamazuj that that the assailant was subsequently shot dead by a relative of the victim from the previous incident.

“The suspect responsible for killing the trader is now in detention as this act was a revenge killing,” Chierey stated.

Commissioner Chierey clarified that the incident is linked to a revenge killing, and authorities, along with the police, will conduct an investigation. He added that the case will undergo court proceedings starting today and concluding tomorrow.

According to the official, a man who had previously killed someone in Mankien payam was arrested by security personnel and is currently held at the police station in Mayom County.

The assailant had returned to Mayom and visited his village in Mankien on Monday. During this visit, he encountered a trader on the road between his residence and the market in Mankien Payam, resulting in the fatal shooting of the trader.

Mayom County Commissioner Luka Chierey stated, “Security personnel were dispatched to the area of the incident to prevent clashes between different groups. We do not want the spirit of revenge to prevail in our community.”
