Trade between Yei town and rural areas has halted after recent fighting in the proposed Yei River State, a top state official said.
David Lokonga Moses, governor of the proposed Yei River State, told Radio Tamazuj that roads between Yei town and surrounding villages were closed, causing rising prices of essential commodities at the market.
Lokonga further said humanitarian organizations and religious leaders were working to register the conflict-affected families in order to give them aid assistance urgently. The state official warned against a possible food crisis if local residents don’t return back homes to cultivate.
Lokonga called upon the people of South Sudan to shun ethnicity and embrace peace, while urging politicians to forget about their differences for the sake of peace and stability in South Sudan.
Meanwhile, several displaced people in Lainya County reported shortages of food and medicines in the area where most of the local residents live in the bush since clashes outbreak between government forces and armed opposition fighters last month.
