South Sudan’s national football team lost 4-0 to Mauritania on Tuesday, ending the country’s bid to qualify for the first time ever to the World Cup.
Mauritanian players Moulaye Khalil and Boubacar Beyguili scored first, before South Sudan’s Aluck Akeuch Deng was tossed from the game in the 79th minute with a red card.
Moussa Samba Moussa and Ismail Diakite struck later to complete the rout.
The disappointing loss came after South Sudan’s hopes were lifted by a victory over Equatoria Guinea last month and a 1-1 tie with Mauritania at home last week.
