A 40-year-old man identified as James Dario committed suicide by shooting himself after fighting with and beating his wife unconscious in the Kudo Payam of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State last Sunday.

A 40-year-old man identified as James Dario committed suicide by shooting himself after fighting with and beating his wife unconscious in the Kudo Payam of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State last Sunday.

The Kudo Payam police investigator, Lance corporal Atilio Albano Galdino, told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the fight ensued after the couple drank alcohol and that Dario might have thought that he had killed his wife, Susan Nyakula, prompting him to take his own life.

“This incident occurred on Sunday. This person (Dario) fought with his wife and she took a stick to beat him and he retaliated and broke her hand. When the wife fell down, he entered the house and shot himself dead,” Corporal Galdino explained. “This is a simple case that should have not even brought death. The name of the late is James Dario Morgan and the wife is called Susan Nyaluka. All are from the Lokoya tribe.”

He said Nyaluka is currently receiving treatment at Torit state hospital.

The Eastern Equatoria State acting youth leader, Orupi David Uywek, expressed sadness over the misuse of firearms and urged the youth to embrace conflict mitigation training.

“I am very sad but criminals and those who have the mentality of beating wives should be condemned by all of us. I appeal to all the youth to join the training in conflict mitigation so that we do not take emotional actions to harm one another,” Uywek advised.

The youth leader also urged his colleagues to join vocational training to keep busy and productive.

“Let them refrain from such cultural practices. We have vocational training here so let them come and consult and we shall direct them so that they can improve their thinking,” Uywek added.

According to local authorities in Kudo Payam, this is the third gun-related incident in the area in just this month.

On 5 January, a woman committed suicide after a family dispute and on 21 January, a trader known as Oyom was chased and killed by national security soldiers in Kudo Payam along the Torit-Juba road after he was found moving with a gun.
