One cattle thief was killed following during a foiled raid in Murahatiha boma of Torit County in Eastern Equatoria State on Sunday evening.

On Sunday evening a group of 5 cattle raiders stormed Murahatiha boma and raided over 25 head of cattle but they were later intercepted by the local youth resulting in the death of one of the raiders near Hiyalla Payam headquarters as they attempted to cross the main road.

Galileo Ohide, the paramount chief in Hiyalla Payam told Radio Tamazuj Monday that the incident happened at around 3 pm some criminals attempted to steal cattle and were seen and reported by a woman.

“They came to steal cattle from Murahatiha, about 25 cattle. They evaded the youth on patrol but a certain woman saw them and reported to the Monyemiji that is why they were intercepted near the Hiyalla gardens,” Chief Ohide said. “The cattle were intercepted and one person was killed from among the criminals and is suspected to be from Buya. The Monyiemiji returned last night and all are now in the village.”

Torit County commissioner Jacob Attari Albano confirmed the foiled cattle raid but said the attackers are yet to be identified.

“We still want to identify from which village that person came from. Today the situation is normal all over the county,” Commissioner Attari said. “The monyiemiji said the raiders were heading towards those mountains between Onming Lalanga and Calamini. They shot the person (raider) when they were about to cross the road going to Kapoeta.”

Budi County authorities could not be reached for comment on the matter.
