A top female politician says there are not enough women in politics, to the detriment of South Sudan.
Deputy Speaker in South Sudan’s Parliament Jasmine Samuel said that the attitude of men towards women’s participation in politics has not changed. It’s important to have more female leaders, she said, because women are underrepresented yet have a larger share of the population than men do.
“Because of cultures and traditions, some men still look at women as sex object and control the women by keeping them in the kitchen,” Samuel said in an interview. “The political space is not for women. Women pushed to be there and constantly they have to continue pushing”
Samuel said in an interview that a conference was organized in May to examine the effectiveness of female members of parliament and in top decision making posts.
