Paul Malong Awan, the chief of staff of SPLA-Juba, one of South Sudan’s warring factions, collapsed on Friday apparently after fainting and since has remained under medical scrutiny.
His collapse was witnessed by a number of other senior officials. Moreover, a member of his family speaking on Monday confirmed that the commander is still suffering from muscle weakness, general malaise and difficulty communicating, though his condition has improved since Friday.
The general appeared on state television on Saturday seeking to reassure the public of his condition. He said he regained his strength after resting for two hours and claimed he was ready to resume his work.
But a source said that medical officers apparently instructed the general not to use his telephone in order to ensure proper rest.
Initially the commander was treated at the ‘J1’ headquarters of SPLA-Juba’s chief Salva Kiir, but sources say he may be referred to a hospital in another country for further care and monitoring.
