Tons of expired food burned at Kaya refugee camp

Large quantities of expired food items were burned in Kaya refugee camp in Maban County of Upper Nile State.

Mayik Maluk, a county director of health, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that tons of expired food items have been disposed in Yusif Batil, Jendrassa, Kaya and Doro camps for Blue Nile refugees.

The official further explained that the food items were burned in Kaya by a committee headed by the Maban County Commissioner.

He revealed that the county authorities had warned the organizations of the danger of providing expired food items to refugees. Maluk noted that the organizations attributed the causes to mismanagement and technical mistakes and vowed to redress the problem.

According to the source, the expired food items included maize, different types of milk and biscuit, and were in the stores of the organizations Goal and Medicines Sans Frontiers-Holland (MSF).
