Tonj, Wau states form joint committee to investigate Jur River clashes

A joint committee between Tonj and Wau states has been formed to investigate recent the incident in Jur River County, a state official said.

Violent clashes between herders from Tonj and local farmers in Jur River County took place over the past two weeks, displacing a large number of local residents.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Akech Tong Aleu, the Governor of Tonj state, said the two states managed to form a joint committee to investigate the incident.

Akech pointed out the joint committee would visit the scene to investigate the killing of at least nine people from both sides during the clashes.

He added that the joint committee will also acquaint itself with the situation of civilians who fled to Wau town and its surrounding villages.

For his part, Dominic Ater, a Member of Parliament in Wau, said many civilians were displaced from their homes and that they are currently experiencing harsh humanitarian conditions.

Ater urged international and local NGOs to provide aid assistance to the needy people as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Nichola Gabriel Adam, Military Spokesman of the SPLA-IO faction allied to Riek Machar, said more than 6,000 people from Jur River have been displaced from their homes.

Gabriel further said the conflict-displaced families are currently facing deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to shortages of food and shelter in Bazia.

He called on humanitarian organizations to provide aid assistance to the internally displaced persons, especially children and pregnant women.
