The governor of South Sudan’s Tonj State Akec Tong Aleu said the security situation in four states covered by the state of emergency declared by President Salva Kiir has improved, citing measures undertaken to control the security situation.

Akec was assigned by President Kiir in July to oversee the security situation in four states comprising Gogrial, Tonj, Aweil East and Wau.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Governor Akec said he is in Juba to brief the president on the general situation in the four states.

“The security situation within the state as well as with the neighbouring States of Wau and Gogrial has improved. We have introduced some measures which have helped us contain the situation,” said Akec.

The top state official listed four measures they have introduced, including forceful and voluntary disarmament, communal dialogue, deployment of joint security forces to hotspot areas and establishment of local courts to try cases and individuals identified to have played a role in the conflict.

The president, according to Governor Akec, commended the efforts and called on the communities to stop fighting and embrace peace and reconciliation so that they resume their normal life.
