The governor of Tonj State Akech Tong Aleu on Thursday ordered registration of all guns and ammunition in the hands of regular forces and civilians across the state.

The governor stated that the move was prompted by the state of emergency declared recently by President Kiir in Gogrial, some parts of Tonj, Wau and Aweil East states for three months.

Governor Akech further said the exercise will be completed within seven days. “All guns in the cattle camps should be registered and every county commissioner should come with a report about the number of guns, because the state of emergency will affect everyone whether you are in government or at home,” he said.

“I am seriously calling on all organized forces that are present here in Tonj to register all their guns and bring the lists to me, whether the guns are for government or personal,” he added.

The governor pointed out that about 3,000 troops will be deployed in the state, warning that those found moving with unauthorized firearms will be affected by the state of emergency.
