Tonj East diaspora condemns violence, calls for justice

The Tonj East community of Warrap state living in Melbourne, Australia has condemned recent clan violence in their home county which claimed dozens of lives and called for measures to end the fighting.

In a letter signed by leaders of the diaspora in Melbourne, the community expressed their grief at the loss of lives and offered condolences to loved ones lost on both sides of the divide.

"We are one people and don't have bordes to dispute, this sends a wrong signal to be exploited by the opponents of the government that the recent decree by the president creating more states is a catalyst to trbal and clan based wars," the letter said.

"We aso condemn this odious violence, including the wanton destruction of property such as the burning of houses in all possible terms and demand that it ceases immediately and that the ringleaders of this crime must be found and punished according to the fullest extent of the law," the letter added.

The diaspora leaders said the authorities should use force to end the fighting and that the commissioner should be removed for failing to control the violence. They said disarmament of civilians should take place and that no side should use the disputed Lol-lith area for official functions until a settlement is reached.

The group called for legal processes to commence leading to compensation and reconciliation.
