The chairperson of the information committee at the national parliament, John Agany, who also doubles and the assembly’s spokesperson, on Tuesday disclosed that the National Elections Act 2012 (Amendments) Bill 2023 will be tabled soon.

According to the 2018 peace agreement, South Sudan will conduct general elections in December 2024, however, critical tasks such as the elections law are yet to be passed in parliament.

Speaking to reporters after the parliament’s session on Tuesday, Agany said the bill which is supposed to be tabled this week but has been delayed in the committee as it is being scrutinized.

He attributed the delays in tabling the bill to the fact that the House was busy with the national budget for the fiscal year 2023/2024.

“The bill was deferred when the national budget was tabled,” he said. “So, now the committee has to again come back and prepare itself to table it and I hope it will be tabled in the next coming sessions.”

Agany who did not state the exact date said the committee is currently scrutinizing the election law.
