A clash between armed civilians turned into a battle with security forces that left three soldiers wounded at Malek Payam of Rumbek Center County on Wednesday morning.
Lakes State acting Information and Communication Minister William Koji Kirjok told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that three national security forces were wounded in clashes with armed civilians, when the former intervened in the inter-sectional dispute that left one civilian dead in Malek Payam.
Kirjok said the clashes erupted after one drunk man shot a person dead at a cattle camp.
When our forces were sent from the headquarters to intervene, the civilians turned on them, forcing a response that resulted in two critical injuries for the soldiers, he said.
The Minister said alcohol consumption is not allowed in Lakes State and those who continue drinking and being in possession of alcohol would be held accountable.
He recounted another incident that happened at the Yar cattle camp of Rumbek Center County that was triggered by consumption of alcohol.
He said a drunk man shot one woman dead in the Yar incident.
Kirjok disclosed that the two wounded security forces had been evacuated and were receiving treatment at the Rumbek State Hospital.
The operation, he said, was still ongoing and that details would be provided later, but the situation was contained.
The Rumbek State Hospital Medical Director, Terran Madit Terran, confirmed that the institution had received casualties, particularly soldiers who were shot.
“We received them and they were taken to the operation theater,” he said.
He said the hospital also received a woman shot in the chest and who later died.
