At least three people including a child drowned when flooding and heavy rains hit Mayom County in South Sudan’s Unity state a few days ago, according to Mayom County commissioner John Bol.

Bol told Radio Tamazuj that the county had witnessed heavy rains from 5 October until yesterday.

“A woman and child perished at Mankien and another man died also along the Mankien-Mayom road due to heavy rains,” he said.

The rains and overflow have caused damage and loss of property in various neighbourhoods and government buildings in Mayom, according to the official.

The commissioner pointed out that many citizens are currently confined in Mankien area, amid what he described as “dire humanitarian conditions” in the area. John Bol called upon aid agencies to provide assistance urgently to the needy people.

Separately, heavy rains and floods also hit Maban County of Upper Nile, cutting off main roads, the county commissioner said.

Temato Nau said torrential rains have cut off the road connecting Kilo Ashara and Bunj town, besides other roads leading to Jamam and Kaya areas.

The county official denied reports that the heavy rains have destroyed houses and caused any significant loss of properties in the area.
