At least three people were killed and one injured after unknown assailants attacked a vehicle in the Turalei area of Warrap State before it could reach Mayom County in Unity State on Friday, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred in the Turalei area of Twic County, where gunmen ambushed a car traveling from Juba through Warrap to Bentiu, the capital of Unity State.
Unity State Information Minister Gatwich Bipal Both confirmed the attack to Radio Tamazuj.
“The injured person was taken to Mayom Hospital for treatment and is currently receiving care,” Both said.
The identities of those killed have not yet been released.
Both added that an investigation into the attack is underway, urging against assigning blame until the findings are concluded. “No side should be blamed pending the outcome of the investigation,” he said.
The attack comes amid ongoing efforts by Unity State Governor Riek Bilm Top to foster peace and reconciliation among border communities, including those in the Abyei and Ruweng administrative areas, over the past month.
No group has claimed responsibility for the ambush.
