Thousands displaced by fighting in W Equatoria last month

Over 2500 people fled to the Democratic Repubic of Congo last month to escape clashes in Western Equatoria state's Ezo county last month, the UN said.

The UN's Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said an unknown number of civilians have escaped to Central African Republic as well while others are hiding in the bush in South Sudan.

Fighting between SPLA and local armed groups broke out in Ezo at the middle of November, prompting the state government and church leaders to send a team to calm tensions.

Looting and destruction of properties and homes took place during the clashes. At least three people were killed. UN OCHA said aid workers have evacuated the area.

UN OCHA said another 7000 people are displaced around Source Yubu in Tombura county. Fighting between SPLA and local armed groups took place in Source Yubu at the start of November leaving at least three dead. The state government and church leaders also visited Tombura county following those clashes.

UN OCHA said aid groups have not reached Tombura yet.

They also said they cannot access Mundri due to insecurity, and that nearly all schools are closed in that area. The SPLA signed a peace agreement with Mundri civilians last month following fighting which began in May leaving an unknown number of people dead and displacing tens of thousands.
