The African Union High Implementation Panel led by Thabo Mbeki has invited the Sudanese government, armed opposition groups and the opposition National Umma Party (NUP) to travel to Addis Ababa on Monday to sign the African Union peace roadmap agreement.
African Union Liaison Office director in Khartoum Ambassador Mahmoud Khan told Radio that Thabo Mbeki’s meeting with the opposition faction will focus on the signing of the African Union roadmap without discussions.
Khan pointed that the African Union chief mediator will meet with the opposition group separately on 8 August to sign the peace roadmap, afterwards, negotiations on the cessation of hostilities and humanitarian access will begin.
Khan further revealed that the Addis Ababa meeting will be represented by two delegations from the Khartoum government, saying Sudan’s Presidential Aide Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid will lead a team on the Two Areas, while Amin Hassan Omer will lead another negotiating team on Darfur.
According to the AU diplomat, the opposition groups will be led by Yasser Arman of the SPLM-North, and Jibril Ibrahim and Minni Arko Minnawi will represent the Darfuri rebels, while Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi will lead the National Umma Party.
