A 15-year-old boy was killed after being beaten during a fight in Koch County of Unity State on Tuesday, a local official said.
Daniel Deng Mayiel, the press secretary in the office of Koch County Commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the deceased, identified as Nhial Gatyang Gatwech, was killed at around 8 pm during a party in the area.
“The incident happened at 8 pm on Tuesday when there was a party. Another young boy punched Daniel dead, but we don’t suspect it to be a revenge attack,” he said.
Mayiel said an investigation has been launched into the killing.
The suspected killer has been identified as Chondok Makuach Malual.
Meanwhile, Gatyang Gatwech, the father of the late Daniel, said the suspect’s family might pay about 51 cows as blood compensation.
“The relatives of the boy did not come to us during the incident, but we are hearing that there will be blood compensation of 51 cows,” he said.
Gatwech said they will not seek revenge as means of resolving the problem.
Traditionally in South Sudan, acknowledgement of responsibilities and compensation are integral components of conflict resolution, peacebuilding and justice.
Traditionally, compensation is paid in cattle and in the case of murder, the number of cattle paid to the relative of the deceased varies from community to community and depending on the nature of the killing.
