Local authorities in Torit County, Eastern Equatoria State, have detained a 15-year-old boy for accidentally shooting and killing a man in Loudo village.

The Eastern Equatoria state police spokesperson, Major Justine Kelopaus Takuru, told Radio Tamazuj that Moses John, 15, shot and killed 45-year-old James Okoro inadvertently on Monday.

“Yes, the information that reached you is true because a report came to us at 3 pm on 9 November that somebody shot a person,” Maj. Takuru said. “We confirmed it yesterday (Tuesday). On 10 November, they brought the suspect called Moses John, 15 years old, and the chief was the one who brought him.”

He said the boy admitted to shooting and killing the man using an AK-47 rifle by mistake.

The detail of the issue is they are from the same village and they were doing patrol in the area with the late called James Okoro, 45,” Maj Takuru explained. “His (John’s) gun was not well cocked and he wanted to hock the gun well so he removes the bullet and cocks it again. The bullet moved and he shot the deceased who was in front of him in the head.”

Torit County Commissioner Jacob Atari Albano confirmed the incident and said the teenager shot Okoro accidentally.

“The report that I got from the culprit whom we detained this (Wednesday) morning is that they were together with the deceased and his (John’s) gun was cocked and he wanted to remove the bullet but by mistake, it triggered the bullet and he shot Okoro in the head,” Commissioner Atari said. “So, that was just an accident that happen in Loudo. Currently, the suspect is in police custody as we talk.”
