Teachers strike shuts down schools in Aweil

Some schools in Aweil North County have been shut down due to a teachers strike.

Some schools in Aweil North County have been shut down due to a teachers strike.

Classes were scheduled to begin last Wednesday, but teachers are demanding two months backpay and a salary increase.

“There is no way we are doing the government work when our children are suffering,” a teacher explained on phone to Radio Tamazuj.

Another teacher also said he will only reopen his school when education authorities have addressed their demands.

“We have already made it clear that without a salary increase and two months pay, we are not going to return back to teaching” the teacher said, who requested anonymity.

The county education director for Aweil North County Abraham Garang Jiluel urged all teachers to be in school, and their demands will be met.

“My message is that, they need to do their teaching and hope that what was said by the government about the salaries increment will still happen” Garang said.
