Tax dispute with bargemen halts voyage of returnees in Renk

Transport of returnees from transit camps in Renk is once again at a standstill after companies responsible for their return to various parts of South Sudan are in an on-going dispute with the local taxation authorities. The case has been referred to local prosecutors who instructed the authorities to detain barges loaded with the returnees’ luggage. Radio Tamazuj has learned that there are fears over the deterioration of the returnees’ health as they continue to wait in poor conditions for transportation to resume. Santino Padiat, the Renk County Commissioner told Radio Tamazuj that there are still unresolved issues between the companies and local taxation authorities even though preparations for repatriation process to resume were underway. Many of those South Sudanese who are waiting in transit camps on both sides of the border have been doing so since last year, triggered by South Sudan’s independence in July 2011.
