Authorities in Western Equatoria State’s Tambura County have apprehended four individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities.
Tambura County Commissioner Mathew Mabenge claimed that the suspects include members of the SPLM-IO from the Balanda community, allegedly involved in a plot to assassinate him. The conspiracy was reportedly uncovered while the Commissioner was traveling from Yambio to Tambura.
“These individuals conspired to harm me and others,” Mabenge told Radio Tamazuj.
“One man who revealed the names of those involved was ambushed and his wife shot. His house in Nagero County was also set on fire.”
Mabenge explained that the deceased was a victim of armed assailants intent on silencing those speaking out against criminal activities in the region.
In a separate incident, law enforcement agents arrested suspects, including a man accused of a murder during a disco event in October. Several gang members were also detained following a tip off from a Balanda youth.
Local authorities emphasized that these actions were part of broader efforts to tackle the rising crime rates in the county. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
“I am working to unite both the Azande and Balanda communities under the SPLM’s vision and mission, ensuring equal service to all. My focus is on restoring harmony in Tambura County,” Mabenge stated:
He appealed to individuals involved in criminal activities to reflect on the consequences for their families and the community:
“Think of your children, your wives, and your families. Stop these destructive acts and join the efforts to build a peaceful future. We must remain vigilant and work together to find solutions. We should also fear God and consider the impact of these actions on our loved ones.”
The Commissioner confirmed that the mediation efforts were ongoing to address tensions, urging the community to collaborate with the authorities to prevent further crimes and promote reconciliation.
“We are committed to upholding peace and security in Tambura. Together, we can overcome these challenges,” Mabenge concluded.
