In July, dozens of people were killed in Wau after clashes between government and opposition groups. Instability has continued in the region since then, and more than 38,000 remain displaced within the town. 

Speaking to press upon his arrival to Juba on Tuesday, Andrea Mayar said that religious leaders have attempted to negotiate with the armed opposition, which would likely take time. 

Mayar said that he came to Juba as part of an invitation of governors to visit the ruling SPLM party.
