A Sudanese national was shot and killed on Monday by his brother-in-law in Malakal town in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State, police said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, State Police Commissioner Major General Chol Atem identified the victim as Abdullah Omar. He pointed out that the incident took place at Hai al-Saha in Malakal town.
According to the police commissioner, the culprit has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to know the motive behind the killing. But I can confirm that he is in our custody,” he said.
“They were staying together in one house, so it is perplexing. People do not understand what could be the reason for the killing. He has not yet talked about the reason, “he added.
Atem identified excessive alcohol consumption and use of drugs as the main cause of an increase in violent crimes such as murder and assault in the state.
When asked about any new developments on the recent incident in which a senior official was killed, the police officer said: “There is no new development, but we are still searching for the perpetrator.”
According to Article 206 of the South Sudan Penal Code, whoever causes the death of another person commits the offence of murder, and upon conviction be sentenced to death or imprisonment for life, and may also be liable to a fine; provided that if the nearest relatives of the deceased opt for customary blood compensation.
