A 26-year-old has been arrested for allegedly killing a man at a cattle raid clash at Hiyala in Eastern Equatoria State’s Torit County.
Local authorities said the suspect was arrested at Tsertenya while trying to escape to Uganda by public transport.
A gang on Tuesday last week raided cattle at Hiyala, prompting the local youth to pursue them, leading to a clash and the killing of a man identified as Oleyo Okongorok.
Authorities earlier accused the youth of Haforiere for being behind the attack, which their leader admitted, and requested the government to apprehend the suspects.
Ikotos County Police Inspector Brig Gabriel Arok told Radio Tamazuj that the suspected killer was arrested at night while attempting to escape to Uganda.
“We have made an arrest but we don’t know the details of the fight. The suspect will give us the details,” he said
Acting Torit Police Central Division Inspector Paulino Loketek confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect has been remanded as investigations continue.
Loketek said the arrest happened after security agents were deployed at the Tsertenya border.
“The man was arrested the day before yesterday near the border of Tsertenya while attempting to escape to Uganda, and according to our laws, anyone arrested will undergo investigations,” he explained.
The Women Agency for Progress Organization activist, Flora Sebit, commended the security agents for their efforts in curbing crime.
She urged the local communities to cooperate with the security agents in reporting the crime perpetrators to face justice.
