Thieves tried to gain entry to the home of a commander of SPLA-Juba forces in South Sudan’s capital over the weekend, but were driven off after the officer opened fire on them.

According to police, the attack took place at a home in the Mauna residential area of Juba. Central Equatoria State Police Commissioner Henry Danima said the officer was inside the house when he heard voices outside.

Asked by the suspected thieves to come out of his house, he refused. “They shot two or three bullets into his house. He responded by also firing from inside. The assailants ran away,” said the police commissioner, speaking on the UN radio service known as Radio Miraya.

He noted emergency police units rushed to the scene and inspected the area. He said they found blood in front of the house, and suspected that one of the assailants was wounded by the resident when he opened fire on the intruders.
