Authorities in Pochalla County of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area have reported suspected cholera cases in some parts of the county.
Olango Ochan, a former county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that two patients died after severe vomiting and diarrhea in the area of Awetaballa last week.
“Since last week, three cases of suspected cholera were reported. Two people died after severe watery diarrhea and vomiting, and one survived. There are no doctors in the area to confirm,” Ochan said.
He added, “This problem came due to floods. There are no boreholes here. We drink water directly from the river.”
The county health director, Amen Opiew said they are yet to establish the cause of the suspected cholera cases in the area.
“We dispatched some health personnel to the area to observe the signs and symptoms. These cases have been there, but our challenge in Pochalla is that we don’t have a laboratory to confirm if it is cholera,” he said.
Opiew appealed to the government and health agencies to intervene.
The health official urged the locals to maintain hygiene and observe precautionary measures put in place by health agencies.
