South Sudan’s Warrap state information minister says armed youth from Unity State’s Mayom County attacked Amathel cattle camps in Gogrial East County on Wednesday and Thursday.
Riing Deng Ading told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that people were killed and cattle raided in the attack without providing further details.
“Yesterday, the Unity state armed youth who belong to Mayom county attacked a place called Amathel cattle camps in Gogrial East County. Armed youth killed people and raided cattle but casualties are not yet confirmed,” he said.
He added, “The county commissioner is in the scene where there is no communication network, I will let you know when the commissioner comes back. The fighting occurred yesterday and today.”
For his part, James Chuol Gatluak, the county commissioner of Mayom in Unity State confirmed the incident and said some cattle were returned to Warrap state.
“The armed youth went to Warrap state yesterday and raided cattle. We don’t know the other attack this morning. 160 cattle were returned to the people of Warrap,” Chuol said.
Commissioner Chuol said there are many criminals in the area and some have been arrested in Mayom.
He said he also does not know the casualty numbers due to the poor communication network in Gogrial East.
