At least twelve civilians took refuge in the headquarters of the Zain cellphone network during recent fighting in Juba.
In an interview at the main gate of the Zain headquarters in Gudele, Moses Juma said he was thankful for the protection after residing in the Zain headquarters.
“Some of the company staff shouted ‘please come here’ when the gunshots erupted,” Moses said.
He recalled that the director of Zain welcomed civilians on the street and offered water, rice, tea, beans, and bedding for those sheltering inside. During the fighting, the Zain headquarters was hit on one side, but it does not appear to have effected the company’s mobile network.
On his way home, Moses saw three dead men lying on the ground – two in uniforms on the football playing field near Zain’s wall, and one in civilian dress around Kalkal Company.
“It is a miracle I survived during heaving shooting in the Gudele residential area on Sunday.”
