Police in Renk County of Upper Nile State said security surveillance along the border with Sudan has been enhanced to curb illegal border crossings as part of efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Major General Manyok Jurkuch, the area police commissioner said the joint forces are making efforts to prevent the entry of Sudanese traders into South Sudan.

He pointed out that residents in areas bordering Sudan have been instructed to adhere to health guidelines on COVID-19 prevention.

The senior police officer warned that anyone who violates the health emergency guideline would face the law, be fined or imprisoned.

On Tuesday, South Sudan’s Ministry of Health announced that 28 people tested positive for coronavirus, raising the total number to 34.

The novel coronavirus is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes and the droplets land in the mouths and noses of another person.

A person can also get infected with coronavirus by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or their eyes.

The most effective ways to protect yourself and others against COVID-19 are to frequently clean your hands, cover your cough with the bend of elbow or tissue, and maintain a distance of at least 1 meter from people who are coughing or sneezing.
