South Sudan’s constitutional court in Juba on Saturday dismissed the case brought by the ousted Western Bahr al Ghazal parliament speaker against the governor of the state Rizig Zacharia.
Mayar had accused the governor of interfering in parliamentary affairs, leading to his impeachment early this year. The MP said that the governor pressured and incentivized MPs to campaign for his impeachment, calling his impeachment illegitimate.
But the high court in Juba ruled against him in a decision that had previously been repeatedly delayed by lack of quorum of the court.
Agok Makur, the lawyer representing the ousted lawmaker, said that seven judges ruled against the plaintiff while two had another opinion. The lawyer Kuol Mabil Kuol from the justice department, who represented the defendant, expressed his joy at the dismissal of the case case after the plaintiff failed to provide sufficient evidence.
In a press statement after the ruling, he praised the way the court handled the matter.
For his part, Andrea Mayar said, “The Supreme Court today has rejected my case and said that it is not reasonable, the complaint is not legitimate, so we have lost the case. So this is the highest court, if there was another court of appeal we would have wanted to go there, but we must accept the decision of this court.”
