The Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company has announced over 14 hours morning and evening daily power outages in Port Sudan.
In a statement obtained by Radio Tamazuj, the company said: “The schedule is due to one of the transformers at the main transmission station going out of service due to a sudden malfunction.”
The company urged the residents to conserve energy to reduce the load until the malfunction is repaired.
A resident, Ayat Mohammed, told Radio Tamazuj: “The power outage schedule is unbearable due to the high temperatures in Port Sudan.”
She noted that the residents usually left Port Sudan during summer due to the heat, but currently, the problem was that the wires were weak, and the transformers needed maintenance to handle the increased consumption due to the influx of displaced people.
“The electricity company is considered private, and citizens pay in advance, so they have the right to receive full service, but it seems there is another unknown issue,” she added, pointing out that health problems had increased due to the high temperatures.
Omayma Al-Sharif told Radio Tamazuj that the weather in Port Sudan was unbearable with the high temperatures and the long power outages.
Port Sudan has become the administrative capital of Sudan due to the ongoing war in the capital, Khartoum. A large number of Sudanese have been displaced to Port Sudan after the war spread to Al-Jazeera State. The city now hosts Army leaders and several ministries and government and private institutions.
