A one-day peace conference conducted by leaders of Sudan’s Misseriya tribes in Meiram locality in Sudan’s West Kordofan State has called for the improvement of security and promotion of peace with South Sudanese border communities, especially the Dinka Malual of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
On 6 November, over 2,000 Misseriya tribal leaders, women, and youth gathered in Meiram town on the South Sudan-Sudan border to discuss, peace, development, conflict resolution mechanisms, and mitigate crime among the neighboring communities in the two countries.
In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday morning, Abo Al-Seid Hamadein, the representative of Misseriya, said all sections of the Misseriya attended the conference and they resolved to tackle criminality orchestrated by their people.
“The conference was conducted on 6 November in Meiram locality in West Kordofan State in Sudan and it brought together all sections of Misseriya including Hajaera and Awlad Kamil plus Fiareen and it was resolved that the Arab leaders must curb criminal activities carried out by their members,” he said. “The resolutions were excellent because all the sections agreed to handle the cases happening in their areas by holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes and finding solutions to the outstanding issues.”
“The Misseriya tribal leaders, women, and youth also resolved to live in peace with the South Sudanese people, especially the Dinka Malual of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State,” Hamadein added.
For his part, a Dinka Malual member of the joint border peace committee who spoke anonymously said that Misseriya have to collaborate with their South Sudanese neighbors along the common border so that the conflict happening momentarily in Sudan is not transferred to South Sudan.
“Things got out of hand with the Government of Sudan and that is why insecurity sometimes happens along the border,” he said. “However, the Misseriya and Dinka Malual are one people and it wise that the Misseriya have committed to stay with us without any problems.”
