Veteran Sudanese journalist Mahjoub Mohamed Saleh has died in Cairo, Egypt after a long illness.
Mahjoub Mohammed Saleh died on Tuesday at the age of 96.
Sudanese journalist Muhammad Awadallah said the media fraternity was saddened by the passing of the veteran journalist who was also the founder and editor-in-chief of Al-Ayyam daily newspaper.
“With his (Mahjoub Mohamed Saleh) departure, the Sudanese press has lost one of its solid pillars,” he said.
Separately, journalist Othman Abdelgader said the late Mohamed Saleh taught Sudanese journalism.
His son, journalist Wael Mahjoub, mourned him on his Facebook page and said, “We have lost a great person.”
He added that his family will receive condolences at Al-Hamidiyah El-Shazleya Mosque in the Mohandiseen area, Cairo.
For her part, journalist Hind Ramadan, one of the female journalists who worked for Al-Ayyam newspaper, said that Mr. Mahjoub Mohamed Saleh held his pen since the 1950s, defending freedom and democracy.
Mahjoub began his work as a reporter before Sudan’s 1956 independence from Britain and Egypt.
