Urwa Al-Sadiq, a senior member of Sudan’s National Umma Party (NUP), has acknowledged the internal conflicts within the formation. The party enjoys a wide support base in the north and west of the country.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Monday, Al-Sadiq said that a faction calling itself the Institutional Reform Group, had begun extensive activities within the party.

“The disputes were being managed within the organizational frameworks, but the group chose the administrative capital of the government in Port Sudan as a platform to launch its movement against the institutions and leadership of the National Umma Party,” he stated.

He noted that the group had adopted a new identity, name, and a political stance that differ from the National Umma Party’s official position, which opposes the war and refuses to align with either side to the conflict.

Al-Sadiq accused the Institutional Reform Group of siding with the military government in Port Sudan and the Army against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

He reaffirmed that the National Umma Party’s stance is to oppose the war chosen by both sides as a means to resolving their issues.

Regarding the position on the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces, a Sudanese umbrella group also known as Taqaddum, he mentioned that the party’s institutions discussed and decided to respond to a request for reforms, leading to the National Umma Party resuming its activities with the coordination and participating in its founding conference, committing to its resolutions.

Fadlallah Burma Nasser was chosen in November 2020 as interim leader of the National Umma Party (NUP) until the general conference to elect a new leader is held.

Nasser, a former army general from the Misseriya tribe of South Darfur, was the first deputy of the late Sadiq al-Mahdi, the NUP party leader who died on November 26 after contracting the coronavirus.
