Leader of Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan started a two-day official visit to Algeria on Sunday for bilateral talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

A statement by Sudan’s Sovereign Council said al-Burhan’s talks in Algeria will cover bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern.

Appearing before the media alongside Burhan, Tebboune spoke of the “centuries-old relations” that unite their “two brotherly nations.”

Sunday’s visit comes at a time when Sudan has been mired by fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group led by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Daglo since April 2023.

The two generals fell out after a joint 2021 military coup that derailed Sudan’s fragile democratic transition.

More than 13,000 people have been killed, 26,000 others injured and around 7.6 million displaced since the outbreak of the Sudanese conflict last year, according to UN figures.
