Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the President of the Sudan Transitional Sovereignty Council, departed for an official visit to Egypt on Thursday morning.
This is Gen. Al Burhan’s second trip to Egypt since his country plunged into a bitter conflict last year.
Egypt has longstanding ties with the Sudanese army and its top generals.
During his stay in Cairo, he is scheduled to engage in bilateral discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, focusing on reinforcing ties between the two nations and addressing shared interests.
Al-Burhan was bid farewell at Port Sudan International Airport by Sovereignty Council member Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jabir, Secretary-General Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Ghali Ali Yousif, and several distinguished ministers.
Accompanying the Sovereignty Council Chairman on this visit are acting Foreign Minister Ambassador Ali Al-Sadiq and the Director of the General Intelligence Service, Lieutenant General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal.
Thursday’s visit comes at a time when Sudan has been mired by fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group since April 2023.
The conflict has turned Khartoum City, the western region of Darfur region and other urban areas into battlefields.
According to United Nations figures, the number of people displaced by conflict since 15 April 2023 inside and outside Sudan has reached 8.1 million. Since mid-April 2023, ACLED has recorded about 13,900 reported fatalities in Sudan.
