Sudanese traders are still complaining about unauthorized taxes collected along the Meiram-Majok Nyinthiou route in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state.

Manut Yel Lual, director of taxation in Warawar and Majok Nyinthiou area in Aweil East County, said about 21 trucks loaded with goods had been detained in Meiram area in Sudan’s West Kordofan state before reaching markets.

Lual said heavy taxes are being imposed on traders by armed Arab militias while on their way to Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, in violation of orders issued by Meiram authorities.

However, Lual downplayed the impact of these illegal checkpoints on the agreement signed between the Misseriya and Dinka Malual, which provides for continuation of border trade between the two tribes.
